What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

Updated · Prolpy

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a brand, a product or a piece of content easy for answer engines to find, understand and repeat. An answer engine is anything that replies to a question with an answer instead of a list of links: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the voice assistants that came before them. When someone asks one of them “which CRM should a small agency use?”, the answer names a handful of products. AEO is about whether yours is one of them, and whether what the answer says about it is right.

Where the term comes from

The phrase is older than today's chat assistants. SEO practitioners used it in the late 2010s, when search results started answering questions directly: featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes and voice assistants that read out a single answer. The idea was the same then as now. If the engine gives one answer rather than ten links, being the source of that answer matters more than ranking seventh.

Assistants that search the web and write their own answers made the term relevant again, and broader. A featured snippet quotes one page. An assistant reads several pages, combines them, and decides which brands to name. The question AEO asks has moved from “is my page the snippet?” to “does the answer mention us at all?”

How AEO differs from SEO

SEO and AEO share most of their foundations. Both depend on pages that can be crawled, that say clearly what they are about, and that other sites link to and discuss. Much of what helps one helps the other. The differences are in what you are aiming for and what you can measure.

  • The result is a sentence, not a position. A search result has a rank you can track. An answer either names your brand or doesn't, and it may describe you well, badly or wrongly.
  • The unit is the question, not the keyword. People ask assistants longer, more specific questions (“best invoicing tool for a two-person design studio in Poland”), and each question can produce a different set of brands.
  • Other people's pages count as much as yours. Assistants that search the web tend to lean on reviews, comparisons and lists published by others. A brand can be well optimized on its own site and still missing from answers, because the pages the assistant reads don't mention it.
  • There is no console. Search engines give site owners data about impressions and clicks. Assistants don't tell you when they named you, so measuring AEO means asking the questions yourself.

What seems to influence whether an assistant names a brand

Nobody outside the companies that build these models knows exactly how an answer is put together, and the process changes. What follows is what can be observed by asking the same questions repeatedly and reading the answers and the sources they cite. Treat it as a set of likely levers, not a formula.

  • Being present in the sources assistants cite. Assistants that search the web usually show the pages they relied on. When a brand is missing from an answer, it is often missing from those pages too. Getting a fair mention on a page an assistant already reads is one of the most direct things you can do.
  • Comparison and “alternatives” pages. Many buyer questions are comparisons: “X vs Y”, “alternatives to X”, “best tools for Z”. Pages that answer exactly those questions, fairly and with specifics, are the kind of source an assistant can use. That includes your own comparison pages, written honestly.
  • Clear, factual content about what you do. Assistants repeat what they can state with confidence: what the product is, who it is for, where it is available, what it costs. A homepage that says this plainly, in text rather than only in images or scripts, is easier to summarize than one that only says “we transform your workflow”.
  • Crawlers that aren't blocked. Each company documents its own crawlers, for example OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot for Google's AI features. A robots.txt that blocks the search crawlers makes it harder for those assistants to read your site. Blocking the crawlers used for model training is a separate decision.

What nobody can promise

AEO is less predictable than SEO, and anyone selling guaranteed placement in AI answers is overstating what is possible. Three things make it hard to promise anything:

  • Answers vary between runs. Ask the same assistant the same question twice and you may get different brands, in a different order. A single answer is an anecdote; a pattern across many answers is a measurement.
  • Models change without notice. The companies behind these assistants update their models and their search behavior regularly, and a brand that appeared often last month can appear less often this month for reasons that have nothing to do with anything its owner did.
  • Effects take weeks. A new comparison page or a mention on a review site has to be crawled, indexed and picked up before it can influence answers. Changes show up gradually, if at all, which is why AEO work needs tracking over time rather than a one-off check.

How you would measure it

Measuring AEO comes down to asking the questions your buyers ask, to the assistants they use, on a schedule, and counting how often each answer names your brand and your competitors. The share of answers that mention a brand is its AI visibility. Tracked over weeks, it shows whether anything you changed moved the answers, and reading the cited sources shows where the gaps are.

You can do this by hand with a spreadsheet and a few assistants. Prolpy does it for you: it asks your prompts to ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode, detects which brands each answer names, and shows the pages AI cited where you were missing. See pricing for what it covers.

AEO and GEO

You will also see the term generative engine optimization (GEO). It overlaps almost entirely with AEO: both are about visibility in answers written by AI rather than in lists of links. GEO comes from research on generative search engines and puts more weight on how content is selected and combined from several sources. Read what GEO means for that side of it.
